The brief was to get inspiration from traditional natural materials that have been around since centuries and are therefore "proofed by history".

I'm not sure if you can notice from the photos, but there is a lot of wood and natural materials. I think there was a focus on returning to the honesty of materials and using them in that manner. Tiny details also become super important so it is no longer about what a product can do and looks like, but what it feels like as well. (or perhaps it has always been that) Plus, there are companies who are out there focusing on improving materials (ie. 3form) to improve products, and I really think that can go far. Materials matter!
And although nowadays the machine is the artisan, they seem to be finding a balance with each other. Manufactured products are being produced with crafted details. What's old is new and new is old!

I wonder if this insight is just because I'm taking my first steps into a world of appreciation for design and manufacture whereas in the "real world" mass produced furniture for the middle income family would never notice, understand, or appreciate the difference in detail or design.

what I missed: designs from Naoto Fukasawa, Alvar Alto, Subterra cork tables, tiny figurines from Marcel Wanders, the Lunar cradle, Jonathan Adler...

Next time I won't tire myself out before attending!
